Good Evening everyone! I’m totally going off tangent today with something totally random. BUT, its still (somewhat) anime related!
During my short break, I’ve been doing some self-reflecting on the past year or so, and I’ve realized I need a better balance of a lot of things in life. Honestly, 2017 went by in a blink of an eye. I don’t want to say I regret anything, which is why progress slowly but surely is better than standing still. Work has not made it very easy for me, to say the least, and on top of that I can be really, really, realllyyy lazy if I want to be. I’m also not one to really make resolutions because more often than not, I’m more prone to break them. So, instead I shall call them my yearly goals.
I have a few set goals for the year, one of which leads me to this post. Last year I tried to do the Goodreads Reading Challenge and came nowhere close to my pledge (a measly 4 of 20). Despite reading manga, I hadn’t curated my catalogue very well.
This year, I plan on changing that. I’ve taken on the Goodreads Reading Challenge, and have pledged to read 20 books (again). Manga is indeed included in this, because if I can search for it on goodreads website it counts. But! I am including regular books in there too, ranging from architectural, classics, and light novels. I’ve been meaning to read a lot of my architectural books as research/reference for a lot of the posts I had in mind for this blog. So yes, it’s time for me to buckle down and really get some architectural content out there. I’m effectively killing two birds with one stone. It’s a win-win situation.
I know one blogger that is on this site and we follow one another (hi Crim!) so if you’re on the site and are participating, let’s be friends. Let’s encourage one another in reaching our goals together!
You can find my profile here: Zel’s Reading Challenge 2018.
Here’s a snapshot of what I plan on reading so far:
Shout-out to the ever so wonderful Mel for my Christmas gift (A Guidebook to Contemporary Architecture in Montreal). But yes, I’ve started Death Note: Another Note and In Praise of Shadows. Also, Attack on Titan: Lost Girls (1 & 2), Log Horizon 1, Project Japan, Posession, After Dark , Animate Form, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and The Poetics of Space. Others I have planned but not here: Platinvm End, Ouran High School Host Club, My Hero Academia, and A Silent Voice.
I’m super looking forward to doing some casual reading on top of studying. Hopefully some of you will join me, or already doing this! If not, what books are you currently reading or planning on reading this year? Love to hear from you in the comments below. 🙂
Haha…I can relate. I also set a Goodreads challenge last year, but I failed miserably in completing it (I hardly read any books last year). But I hope to realise it this year: planning on doing much more reading in 2018! Good luck on your own challenge 😀😀

Thanks Ryuji! LOL, to reiterate, I will be reading Manga during this challenge, but am going to try to up actual books – for research! I really want to get great Architectural content out to you guys, and I need to read for that to occur.
Thank you for the support!

Good luck on the challenge. I don’t have a Goodreads account so I can’t join you, but I’m currently tackling Haruhi Suzumiya light novels (as of this comment, I’m partway through Disappearance).
I seem to remember reading Another Note at one point, but since I wasn’t familiar with Nisio Isin before Juuni Taisen, I might have to go find it and read it again…

Thanks! Did you like reading Juuni Taisen btw? I almost picked it up. I’m a bit confused by the ending, wonder if the ending in the book was any different?
Do you like the Haruhi Suzumiya light novels? I’ve been curious about that series in general.

I haven’t tackled the Juuni Taisen light novel but I’m reading the manga (which is ongoing). Currently the two (manga/anime) are mostly on the same path, meaning there may be the same ending as well. To be honest, the pace at which they put the anime ending made it a bit confusing…
I’m in that kind of neutral state about them (neither like nor dislike). Even though the translators don’t attempt to explain some of the Japanese/other concepts and they don’t provide context for references to past events, they’re surprisingly easy to understand. The thing about light novels means that you can often tell when they sold well due to a highly-consumed/highly-popular anime, and the more Haruhi novels I read, the more I’m convinced the popularity of the novels was due to the anime because Kyon is as likely to snark as he is to ramble on about something or other. Then again, I admit I’m not part of the target demographic for these light novels…

Even if your’re not the target demographic, I’m still interested in your thoughts 🙂 so thank you for sharing. But that’s interesting, I never thought about the correlation between the light novels and the actual anime itself. I should look at the bigger picture of things.
I’ve been wanting to read the Juuni Taisen light novel, almost picked it up, but picked up Another Note instead (didn’re realize they were the same author…i was wondering why the author of Another Note sounded so familiar.)
Ah, true the last episode of Juuni felt rushed and really weird considering….I was utterly confused by Nezumi’s wish..and I think I still am, what were his reasonings, did he even have any?

[Insert obligatory spoiler warning here.]
Nezumi’s wish was “to forget” (about everything that happened in the Juuni Taisen) because his power is to live through 100 different realities and select the one he likes the most, with the caveat of remembering what happened in every timeline after the selection happens (which is basically his justification). Basically, since this is Juuni Taisen, remembering what happened is a terrible thing and being rid of the memories is better than living with them. [end spoilers]

AHH okay, I was just thinking about it today too, if it was purely not wanting to remember the numerous timelines he remembered to survive….thanks for that! : D

I go through phases of just reading manga to just watching anime to just reading novels. I would like to find more manga to enjoy this year.

I do too! But instead of novels is fanfic. LOL, so I’m trying to switch it up this year.
Let’s find some manga together! 🙂

Yesssss more people on Goodreads lmk so I can follow you~ xD Thanks for the shoutout and OMG I feel like I Never reach my reading goals! I usually make 2 of them. One of them manga related and the other just novels. I usually do pretty well on the manga only bc they’re easy reads but actually sitting down and reading a book? Takes me longer. So this year I think I also set my goals to 20 and now that you mention your architectural reads, I was debating reading more nonfiction books on subjects I’m interested in, especially those books I had to buy for school as they’re just collecting dust ^^;;
I can’t wait to see more of your architect stuff on the blog as I find stuff like that really interesting!
Also, I read that DN book a few years back and I really enjoyed it so I picked up another DN book called L change the world (or something like that). I’ve seen the movie but haven’t read the book so I thought I’d change that but it references some stuff from the first book and I’m just here like maybe I should reread it xD so i might also be reading that this year
And the murakami book!! That’s been on my shelf for like a year and I really want to get to it, will this be the year?! xD
Good luck to us both!

Thanks Crim!! Aw, im so glad you guys like the architectural content! I wanted to do way more, but I need to brush up my knowledge and references before I can!
I’m enjoying Another Note so far, but part of me wonders if i should be reading it before bed due to the dark nature of it (murder cases and all)
good luck to us! I’m off to a good start so far! Let’s continue to support one another Crim!

I’m not ready for any challenge at the moment, but I’m definitely planning on doing more reading myself this year. Good luck and have fun! (Log Horizon, at least the anime, is a huge favorite of mine—enjoy~)
