When Your Dreams Dissolve into a Barren Wasteland [OWLS Blog Tour]

Hello everyone! Today’s a special day at Archi-Anime, as it’s my March tour stop on the OWLS blog tour. Just a friendly reminded that OWLS: Otaku Warriors for Liberty and Self-Respect, is a group that hope to spread the important message of respect and kindness to every human being. Our monthly blog tours that reflect this message of tolerance and self-acceptance, through various analysis of the anime medium; although it is not limited to anime.

This month’s topic is Sanctuary:

A sanctuary is a place of safety and stability. In anime, there are several different places and environments that characters call “home.” For this topic, we will be discussing various locations and settings within certain anime series.

At first, I didn’t think I was going to participate in this month’s tour, I was kind of fresh out of ideas. Until a member asked if it had to be a physical place; that triggered my memory of this anime.

As our prompts suggest a “sanctuary” represents a home, a safe haven of sorts.  A place you can return to when things get rough. A place to come to sort yourself out. It’s original meaning is a sacred place, like a shrine, for example.

But what if your “sanctuary” represented something more than something ‘safe’. What if your sanctuary served as a place to remind yourself of your ideals and dreams; not just dreams, but your failed attempts at following your ideals and dreams. A shrine dedicated to a constant reminder of your dreams dissolving to dust. You’re probably asking me how in the world is that a sanctuary? How does that help an individual grow?

For this month’s tour I’m looking at Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. Now, this is probably going to be a huge spoiler to those who have not seen it. So, if you care or don’t, that’s up to you to decide.

EVERYBODY LOVES A GOOD BAD GUY

Ah, bad guys, baddies, antagonists, scum of the earth. You can’t help but just love a good bad guy. The worse they are, the more we’re drawn to them, even when they end up dying you can’t help but feel a tiny bit sad they’re gone, but at the same time you’re like yes! They deserved what was coming to them! So here are my Top 5! (To be honest, I wanted to add a FMA character, but *sigh* I wanted to stick to a top 5. I’ll feature an FMA character when I go back to single posts! But! Lists for now!)

5. Zeref, Fairy Tail

The greatest Antagonist of the Fairy Tail world! He becomes the ultimate bad guy by mastering powerful Dark magic and becoming  the most evil mage in history by creating various demons that have been active and inactive throughout the years. His journey to becoming a n evil mage happened unintentionally as he had started from a good place. Due to the demon’s he’s created, many dark guilds have used him as inspiration in bringing upon evil in the world.

30 DAY ANIME CHALLENGE | 25

The scene I want to talk about today is both a mixture of utter shock and sadness. I’m not exactly the biggest fan of Illyasviel Von Einzbern in UBW. She’s basically one of the bad guys. There wasn’t enough character development of her for me to get attached to her. So what happens to her didn’t exactly pull on my heartstrings or make me bawl my eyes out like Your Lie in April. But what happens is indeed really sad

SPOILERS ahead if you haven’t seen Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works

Gilgamesh probably ranks second in favorite villain category. He’s got this disdain for humanity and his greed for the holy grail and he’s incredibly full of himself – the so-called the King of Heroes. Illyasviel isn’t exactly human. She’s a homunculus created and raised by the Einzbern family. She’s got a bit of a really sad backstory involving the M.C Shirou; but that’s another story.

Anyways, this scene is really brutal. Gilgamesh is a total sadist in this scene. If you didn’t like him before you’d definitely hate him now. I know I definitely did!  He’s a servant just like Illyasviel’s Berserker. In this scene he’s just finished killing Berserker leaving Illyasviel all alone in the world. As shes stands in her state of grief, Gilgamesh pulls a sword out and when she looks at him, it’s implied that he blinds her.  As shes stumbling around trying to get to Berserker’s body, he casually walks up to her and sticks her with his blade. She collapses and as she lays dying she thinks she’s finally touched Berserker and dies peacefully. However, she’s actually touching a rock. All while doing this, Gilgamesh is just standing there watching her with a smirk on his face. What makes this really sad is actually watching her die and stumble around completely weak. I’m attaching the clip; however it’s title honorable death – I don’t think she died honorably at all.

Ah, just watching this makes me feel kind of sad and frustrated again with how she dies and Gilgamesh’s lack of humanity.

Anyways, that’s all for today’s prompt! 5 more days! Whats the saddest death scene you’ve guys watched?

30 DAY ANIME CHALLENGE | 16

I can’t believe I’ve already made it halfway through the challenge and am only off by 1 day!! I hope to keep this going strong. I also hopethis post isn’t too spoilery so I’ll try to keep it short.

Anyways, an Anime with the best animation. It’s hard to quantify this just because everyone has their own tastes and their own and on top of that there are all kinds of styles that could be considered the best. But for me, I’m choosing one that really had some incredible action sequences. I also loved the way they depicted magic powers with this colorful wisps of color-it had a very ethereal quality to them

I’m going to have to say  Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Budget Blade Works by Ufotable animation studios. Character design is a strong nod to the visual novel aesthetic; while the characters aren’t necessarily the most complex in facial expressions’ it’s something I overlook due to the rest of the content. This series may rely heavily on some post processing but the action scenes really are by far the best animated scenes. They’re vibrant and beautifully sequenced fight scenes. There’s a particular scene I want to talk about but looking ahead I can already see I can cover it at a later date. I also am particularly  partial to how Archer’s reality marble is animated. I love Archer >_<!!

Here’s a few gifs I found…speaking of post-processing and CGI effects. I’m about to open Final Fantasy XV! I’ve been waiting for this for a long time!!! Sorry to keep this one short and sweet! Till next time!
