Architecture of No. 6 : Points of Interest

Welcome back to Fantasy Friday! Continuing with the theme of No. 6, I’m featuring some other points of architectural interests from the show. The building’s featured this week vary in their function. While a few of them are considered civic public spaces, there are a few more private ones!

Moondrop

The moon drop is a structure that sits in the middle of the City of No. 6. I’m not quite sure what the Moondrop does, but if anyone can remember, please tell me in the comments below. I have a feeling it has to do with something that happened at the end of the series, but not quite sure. Also, there wasn’t much information about it on any of the wikia pages, other than that it howls when an oncoming storm was about to hit.

Checkpoint

The checkpoint serves as the threshold that links different sections of the city together. A citizen must pas through these if they wish to go from one section to the other. Citizens were a bracelet that serves as their ID which can be scanned at these locations.

When I look at the checkpoints, I see brutalist architecture. Brutalist architecture stems from the french word for “raw”, and adapted as a term for an emerging architectural movement after modernism and flourished from 1950’s to mid-1970’s. Brutalist architecture is often characterized by massive (not just in size, but character as well) as well as the predominant use of exposed concrete. The style just screams heavy, daunting, looming. This style of architecture also became quite popular for a lot of government projects, shopping centers and  high-rise housing. I think the use of this style for the checkpoints actually fits really well as it would feel like an intimidating building to approach.

Twilight House (Eldery Care Facility)

The Twilight House is considered to be part of the Elite sector of No. 6’s society. This can be inferred by the estate that surrounds the building, as it’s covered with lush greenery. Safu brings her grandmother here, where a lot of the elderly population comes to live out the rest of their time.

I can’t think of an architectural style that can necessarily be associated with this particular building.

Museum

I saved the Museum for last because this one resonated with me the most in terms of modern architecture. Specifically, the piece of architecture that’s partially hidden in the back.  While this architecture seems rather grand and maybe even unreal, the piece in the background could easily have been inspired by Architect, Santiago Calatrava and his suspension bridge. A more specific example would be his Chords Bridge, located in Jerusalem.
